What is national video game day?

National Video Game Day is a holiday that has come about due to the ever increasing popularity of videos games from the 20th through the 21st centuries. It’s an unofficial holiday which is celebrated on September 12th and shouldn’t be confused with Video Game Day – a holiday which is celebrated on July 8th.  This day is a great day to show just how much of a fan you are of video games.

National video game day timeline
  1. 1940 - Debut of the Video Game. The first video game, ‘Nim’ is introduced at the New York World’s Fair by Edward Condon.
  2. 1977 - The Ancestral Console. Atari’s first console, the Atari 2600, is released with games like “Frogger.”
  3. 1985 - The Year of Mario’s Inception. The first Super Mario game is released!
  4. 1989 - Gaming on the Go. For the first time, gamers can travel with their consoles as Nintendo releases the Game Boy in the summer.
  5. 2019 - Pokemon for the Switch generation. “Pokemon Sword and Shield” for the Switch are both released.
